Side Effects of Aloe Vera
Everybody believes that Aloe Vera
is a beneficial plant and has value that I have been told about the benefits of
aloe vera all along. But beside of this it has many
side effects or disadvantage. Let’s talk about this which is given below:
·
There
is speculation about aloe vera latex and its ill
effects – which is why we are covering this first. The aloe vera
latex is one of the two substances the plant produces (the other being the
gel). The latex is yellow and comes from underneath the plant’s skin. Taking
the latex internally can be unsafe, irrespective of the dose. Some of the side
effects it can cause include stomach cramps, kidney issues, and low potassium
levels.
·
Aloe
-- either gel or latex -- is POSSIBLY UNSAFE when taken by mouth. There is a
report that aloe was associated with miscarriage.
It could also be a risk for birth defects. Do not take aloe by mouth if you are
pregnant or breast-feeding.
·
Aloe
Vera latex is known to cause hepatitis, reduction in glucose level and thyroid
dysfunction. According to a Nigerian study, using Aloe Vera can aggravate the
risk of arrhythmia, or irregular heartbeat. It increases the risk of colon
cancer.
·
If
you suffer from irritable bowel syndrome or any gastrointestinal problems, then you should not consume aloe vera juice. Due to the laxative effects of the plant,
excess consumption may cause loose motions and diarrhea.
·
Consuming
aloe vera juice might cause your blood sugar level to drop. If you are diabetic, this can be a major
concern. Thus, it is recommended that you talk to your doctor.
·
Although
aloe is used topically to heal certain skin
disorders, it also may cause skin irritation. Surgical wounds have healed
more slowly after application of aloe, according to MedlinePlus.
Additionally, applying aloe juice to the face after a skin peel (dermabrasion) may cause redness and burning. Applying aloe vera juice to the skin before sun exposure can cause a
rash.
·
Some
people are allergic to aloe. This
allergy is especially common in people who are allergic to plants in the Liliaceae family such as garlic, onions, hyacinths, lilies
and tulips. Signs of an allergic reaction may include skin rash or hives, itchy
or swollen skin, difficulty breathing, tightness in the throat or chest and
chest pain. An allergic reaction to aloe vera juice
should be considered a medical emergency.
·
Do
not take aloe latex if you have hemorrhoids.
It could make the condition worse. Remember, products made from whole aloe
leaves will contain some aloe latex.
·
High
doses of aloe latex have been linked to kidney
failure and other serious conditions.
·
Aloe
vera is widely used to prevent hair loss and for
battling the problem of dandruff. However are you very sure that this would not
take a back seat? If yes, then think again because the product, which is used
for the betterment of hair quality, is reported to cause a reverse effect
leading to severe hair loss. It has often been said to cause dryness of the scalp often leading to
severe itching.
·
Though
certain people believe aloe vera can help treat constipation, there is no evidence for
this. In fact, according to the American Cancer Society, the sale of aloe vera products as a treatment option for constipation was
banned due to lack of proper evidence.
·
The
laxative effects of aloe vera can also lead to dehydration. One report recommends
against the use of aloe vera in patients suffering
from severe dehydration.
·
According
to a Nigerian study, using aloe vera can increase the
risk of arrhythmia, or irregular
heartbeat.
·
Aloe
vera can cause electrolyte
imbalance, more so in people who are already experiencing diarrhea. This
can also lead to low potassium levels. One study says that the laxative effect
of aloe vera can lead to electrolyte imbalance.
·
If
you are undergoing medical treatment
for an ailment or taking prescription drugs, the side-effects of drinking aloe vera juice can hit you harder. It may react with your
medicines and the laxative present in the juice can inhibit absorption of some
drugs in the body.
·
Aloe
vera juice can cause your body to produce excessive
amounts of adrenaline which can be harmful for people who suffer from heart problems. It lowers the potassium
levels in the body, causing irregular heartbeats, weakness and soft muscles. It
is therefore, not recommended for children and elderly people.
·
High-dose
ingestion of aloe vera, according to studies, can
lead to liver inflammation. The
bioactive compounds in aloe vera might interfere with
the liver’s detoxification process, thereby causing complications in sensitive
individuals.
·
Consuming
aloe latex can also cause muscle
weakness. One Chinese study notes muscle weakness as one of the common
adverse effects of aloe vera supplementation.
·
Aloe
vera might obstruct the absorption of thyroid medication, thereby causing the
symptoms to aggravate. Intake of aloe supplements has been directly linked to
thyroid problems.
